Intro
Daspletosaurus(frightful lizard) was a relative of T-rex. It looked very much like its cousin, but it had slightly bigger arms and small horns above the eyes, like Allosaurus. It's a pretty awesome dinosaur and it's one of my favourites on this website. Anyway, this dinosaur terrorised Alberta and Montana 77 to 74 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous.
Appearance
Daspletosaurus was truly frightful. It was the top predator in it's area, reaching 8-9 metres in length and about 2.5 tonnes. The skull was massive, 1m in length. The bones were heavily built and some were fused for power and strengthening. The arms were small, but Daspletosaurus actually had the longest arms of any tyrannosaurid. The centre of gravity was at the hips.
Diet
Like Giganatosaurus, Daspletosaurus was a big game hunter. There were nearly no sauropods in it's area, so it hunted ceratopsians (horned dinosaurs) like Centrosaurus and hadrosaurs like Hypacrosaurus. Judging by the documentary Planet Dinosaur, it hunted in packs.
Pack Fact!
Daspletosaurus appears in the documentary Planet Dinosaur, a pack of them take on a Chasmosaurus. Yet the Daspletosaurus' don't live harmoniously; some skulls have been found with Daspletosaurus teeth marks in them!!!
